FRISCO, Texas – The Keeper of the Game Foundation (KoTG) announced on Thursday, April 1, that it has named Greg Weghorst as Director of Media Relations.
Weghorst is no stranger to the sports and media world. He spent seven years as Assistant Commissioner and Director of Media Relations of the NCAA Division III American Southwest Conference (ASC) and three years as a sports writer at the Temple Daily Telegram. Currently, he is a communications coordinator for one of the largest school districts in the state of Texas, which serves more than 53,000 students and 6,000 employees.
Weghorst also assists with championship events and media days for the NCAA Division II Lone Star Conference and has served as the official scorer for the University of Texas at Dallas men’s and women’s basketball teams for the past nine seasons.
Weghorst also brings a wealth of community-relations experience to KoTG. He works closely with numerous Dallas/Fort Worth-area chambers of commerce and elected officials. Weghorst also directed the ASC’s “Make a Change in 14 Days” loose-coin charity campaign, which raised more than $56,000 to benefit local community organizations of member institutions.
“We are very fortunate to have Greg Weghorst as the newest addition to our foundation staff,” KoTG Founder James Vilade said. “Greg has an outstanding working background in NCAA sports media relations. His passion to serve others and love for baseball will benefit so many people through our foundation.”
Keeper of The Game was founded on Oct. 16, 2014 by Vilade, who coaches for the Frisco RoughRiders and is a scout for the Texas Rangers. The mission of KoTG is to provide athletes with disabilities and special needs unique baseball experiences that foster the growth of those individuals and their love of baseball. KoTG promotes programs which allow these athletes to play, watch and experience baseball at a very personal level. This is all done with a focus on advancing servant leadership.
Weghorst’s primary responsibilities at KoTG will be to issue press releases, work closely with media and other foundations’ communication teams, handle promotions, provide coverage of community events and maintain the foundation’s new website, www.KeeperofTheGame.org. He will also manage the foundation’s social media outlets, including Facebook, Twitter (@BaseballKeepers) and Instagram (keeperofthegame).
Weghorst, a native of Waco, Texas, is a 2003 graduate of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (UMHB) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mass communication/journalism. While an undergraduate, he was a reporter at the school’s newspaper, The Bells, and worked as a Christian music disc jockey for KBDE-FM in Waco. Weghorst was a student intern in the UMHB Sports Information Office under Jon Wallin.
Weghorst also covered the 2004 Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Houston and contributed to Total Texas Baseball magazine.
He and his wife Casey, and their daughter Tatum and son Hank, reside in Frisco, Texas.
